Cutting and Forming Metal Foils
 
.002" Stainless Steel Foil - Only cuts with scissors. Stainless steel foil can be applied in RF-EMI room enclosures, using a conductive adhesive much like hanging wallpaper on walls, ceilings and floors. Be careful of sharp edges.
 

.003" Aluminum Foil - Doesn't tear with fingers, cuts with scissors and can be shapes by hand. This durable foil can be stapled or glued with a minimum of 3" overlaps that can be taped adhesive foil tape or soldered, using solder formulated for aluminum.

.005" Copper Foil - Cuts with scissors, shapes by hand, retains shape but with some malleability. With 8 times the thickness of store-bought aluminum foil .005" Copper Foils is a sufficently strong grade for RF or EMI shielding, because of its pliability. Indents with a light touch.

.010" Copper Foil - Cuts with scissors, shapes by hand, makes 90º bends by hand. Also referred to as 10mil foil it is pliable but able to retain its shape when covering corners and other areas.
 
.016" Copper Foil - Needs metal snips to cut, can be bent by hand, though 90º bends by hand are difficult. More rigid and less pliable that thinner copper foils, 16mil copper can hold weight and is best bent shaped with tools. It is a very durable sheet of copper. It can also be trimmed with a utility knife using a heavy duty cutting blade.

RF-EMI-Shielding.com sells non-plated pure-metal alloy industrial foils that are annealed (softened) at the mill. This soft temper makes foil easier to shape and bend for quicker RF EMI shielding installation - without leakage. Foils are installed like wallpaper using a conductive adhesive with overlapped seams sealed with copper foil tape or by soldering.

RE-EMI Shielding Foil Specifications

Copper Foil is manufactured to the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) B 187, B 152 and B 283-09 specification standards for copper and copper alloy: C11000 copper is 99.95% Copper and .04% Oxygen, for hard drawn sheet offering high thermal and electrical conductivity with low ground resistance.

1235 Alloy Aluminum Foil 99.35% pure with .05% copper; 0.5% magnesium; .01% Zinc; .05% Tin and .65% Silicon. Annealed Aluminum Foil (Soft Temper) offers high thermal and electrical conductivity with low ground resistance.

304 Alloy Austenite Stainless Steel with 16% chromium, .15% carbon, plus sufficient nickel or manganese structural integrity at all temperatures.Annealed Stainless Steel Foil (Soft Temper) also offers high thermal and electrical conductivity with low ground resistance.
